St John the Baptist
Matlock Bath

Matlock, Derbyshire

This remarkable private chapel was built by the redoubtable Mrs Harris just over a hundred years ago to the designs of the leading Arts and Crafts architect Sir Guy Dawber, one of the founders of the CPRE. She assembled a glittering array of artists to realise her dream led by Louis Davis for the glass at the east end and George Bankart for the barrel-vaulted plaster ceiling (do notice the birds flying across the ceiling). The chapel was built over a well which can be picked out on the roadside.

The Friends have undertaken a programme of repairs which included the rebuilding of Dawber's gates into the churchyard and the cleaning and repair of the chandeliers.

Can visitors please keep children and dogs away from the edge of the churchyard where there is a long drop to the road.

If you would like to visit the church and need details of keyholders, directions etc, please telephone our office on: 020 7236 3934.
